Skills Day Event

Surgery Centers ONLY

IMPORTANT:

At the Request of Several Prominent Surgery Centers,
CPR St. Louis Has Developed a Skills Day for Nurses…

AND

We Would Like to Give Your Facility’s Nurses
the Opportunity to Take Advantage of this Critical Training.

The purpose of this training day is to help prevent the mishandling of an emergency (avoiding potential legal consequences and ultimately patient death) in your center. Ensure that your staff is confident and knowledgeable when a crisis occurs. This training focuses on preparing your staff to be able to use the lifesaving equipment and supplies available to them specifically in your center.

All of your nurses are either ACLS or PALS certified. These certifications happen ONLY every 2 years. This is not enough! In addition, your nurses must be extremely familiar with the equipment available to them at your facility.

In healthcare, we know that every second counts. Fumbling in the crash cart for a medication or airway adjunct can delay life-saving interventions. After completing this skills day at your center, your nurses will have the confidence and training they need to act rapidly in both respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies. This will help save lives and help protect you and your patients.

The 5 Critical Stations that Skills Day Includes:

NOTE: We can also modify the training if you would like more emphasis placed on a particular station.

1. Pharmacology Station: This station will break down the drugs your staff has available to them in the crash cart. This training will include the following:

  • trade name and generic forms of each drug
  • when to give it
  • how to give it
  • how much to give and what to expect
  • what it looks like in your crash cart

2. ECG Rhythm station: This station will present many different looks at both emergent and non-emergent rhythms.  Your staff will learn tricks to help them identify cardiovascular emergencies on the monitors. This will help them intervene more rapidly when a patient begins to deteriorate. Early identification of abnormal cardiac rhythms on the monitor can prevent a code from happening.

3. Airway Station: This station will allow each nurse to practice their airway maintenance skills. We cover everything from nasal airways to intubation.
This includes:

  • Insertion of basic and advanced airways
  • Endotracheal tube placement
  • Location and use of airway adjuncts specific to your facility.

Respiratory arrest often deteriorates into cardiopulmonary arrest. Staff members must be properly trained in this category.

4. Pacing and Defibrillation: In this station your nurses will practice pacing and defibrillation with your center’s equipment. ACLS providers know when to provide these life-saving interventions, however, not all of them know how to use the equipment available in their work surroundings. This station will briefly review how to pace and defibrillate patients and then allow everyone a chance to have hands-on practice. This practice will be with the equipment they would be using in a real emergency. Better to be trained before an emergency happens. Every second counts when a patient starts to go downhill.

5. Case Simulations a.k.a. Multiple Mega Code Station: In this station, your staff members will actively participate in simulations for respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies specific to your facility and patients. Each member of the staff will play a role in each case. We will cover the signs and symptoms of each emergent situation. Your staff will be presented with a patient scenario, and then be asked to use their ACLS skills along with equipment available to them to intervene. This station further prepares staff members should a code take place. The following 8 mega code cases will be simulated. Staff members will rotate roles in each case.

  • Respiratory Arrest
  • Bradycardia
  • Tachycardia Stable and Unstable
  • Ventricular Fibrillation
  • Pulseless Ventricular Tachycardia
  • Asystole
  • PEA
